proving slavery

PROVING SLAVERY

In the second book of the Supervolcano series, All Fall Down, Harry Turtledove strives mightily to prove how valiant and wonderful the FedGov is, leaping the tallest buildings and whatnot.  Oh, sure, all the little minions are portrayed as scum suckling anal whores.  Petty tyrants.  Worthless oxygen wasters.  But the system as a whole is given the hero of the story status, even if it is subtle about the whole thing.  Then, towards the end, as if seven out of eight New York Times Best Sellers List readers are complete and utter morons who surely move their lips as they read Harry’s latest gift to mankind, he has to slam dunk the hence subtle message home just to make sure we all know.  One character as a teacher ( the books are chock full o’ government workers such as police, military and teachers.  In a universe where the FedGov is all wonderful, only civil servants having been handed the mantle of righteousness are the new hero’s.  Soldiers, because they would never join the military since that is the only avenue open to the poor, but surely because they are patriotic.  Police, because they NEVER put dope smokers in jail to be raped by murderers but only because they are The Thin Blue Line and only care about widows and babies.  And teachers, who Point To The Light Amongst The Ignorant Unwashed Proletariat,  never because they are system propagandists/brainwashers.  Harry, if I remember correctly, is a professor in Byzantine history.  Or at least got his doctorate.  I’m SO happy he is now spooning pabulum to the masses from books rather than Kalifornians in the classroom.  But it does explain his worldview, doesn’t it? ) is in the process of Dispelling Nuggets Of Wisdom.

*

Yep, a super volcano has erupted, the economy is worse than the 30’s, 70’s and 00’s combined, and people still have money to send their kids to Catholic school ( a system I’m a big fan of, its middle school instilling such teaching in me I was able to then coast through public High School ) to be edu-macated by our character a big dipstick.  The Civil War was fought for slavery, he proclaims!  Can you prove that, an Asian student asks ( I won’t jump all over that one ).  Why yes, just look at the Confederate Constitution which protects the property of the slave-holder.  AHHH!!!  Our delightful hero!  Have sex with me, teacher! ( okay, the last part didn’t happen ).  Thanks, Harry, for being such a delightful and entertaining whore for big daddy imperialist government.  I argue that what this proves is what the Confederacy was fighting for was its economic survival ( as was the North, to be fair ).  That was through agriculture with slavery ( which every other nation had also used, including those countries yelling against the institution now substituted with by carbon fuel machines ).  To keep that, States Rights were vital.  The North, its economic survival now in Industrialism, needed a centralized all powerful Federal government which used the States as colonies.  Both sides were fighting for naked self-interest.  BOTH sides, not just one.  Both were about equally guilty or not.

*

So, Harry, I have to say I’m a bit disappointed with you.  You are supposed to be a history professor after all.  Follow the money, people.  Not the propaganda.

  1. Ohhh Jimmy:
You forgot the most commonly type of slavery: The marriage certificate.

The Fem-Nazi group that take everything from your labor days and @ the end take the one +/ half of everything you got.

Be honest and tell how much did that cost you.

    Rick.

  2. I have do doubt that TD books sucks. As much as I liked "Guns of the South". the South Africans were so over the top racists that they made Nazis mild in comparison. His book on aliens invading in WW2 was so boring!

Only "Lucifer's Hammer" was the only big name writer PAW book that was any good. Most PAW books just plain suck, but a few independents on kindle have been much better.

  3. A great review, Lord Bison. I always shied away from turtledove because he seemed like a bit of a huckster. You've now validated that.

But taking a step back from your review for a second, I'm trying to understand the framework of your criticism(s). You despise zombie apocalypse books, and you also seem to have a very specific style of characterizing doom and gloom books.

In very specific terms, what is the difference between "militia porn" and your everyday tactical group mowing people down, like in the American Apocalypse series?

Also, has there ever been a photo of the B-POD? I keep trying to visualize it through a variety of your blog articles, but I'm still a little hazy. If there is a photo posted anywhere, a link would be appreciated.

Lastly, because I think we both agree that AR-15 rifles are for preppers, and battle rifles (anything shooting .30-06, .308, .303, etc) are for survivalists, I have concerns about hearing some venom from you around the M1A / M-14 rifle. Is it the platform itself or is it a resentment against Springfield Amory? Inquiring minds want to know!

Oh....one last thing. Although the 9mm round is an abomination, I'm officially giving the Browning Hi-Power a pass. Because of the John Moses Browning heritage of this firearm, I think it is worth owning (and also because it feels like a 1911 that uses rimfire).

The main differance between militia porn and PA is the replacement ammunition, or lack thereof. The M14 is simply too expensive for a design slightly inferior. Save a few hundred and buy an American HK91, if you must do semi battle rifles. Not all 9mm is useless. They have their place. Although limited to the initial die-off. As for my characterization of PA books being worthy, just check out The Top 20 list ( at the bottom of each article is the link ). That should give you an idea- but basically, if not enough people die, I don't think it realistic. I'm sure there is more, I've just never anaylized it.

  4. Byzantine huh. Probably prefers Justinian to Belisarius, just guessing. Now here is how I get smoking hot Asian girls to bump ugly: The state of Georgia has two counties named Gwinnett(originally Gwynedd), and MacIntosh. Gwinnett is named for Button Gwinnett a signatory of the Declaration of Independence, come on you remember that practical joke. MacIntosh is named for general Lochlainn MacIntosh, an actual soldier during the Revolution, remind me - who won that? Well these two boyos had a problem - Gwinnett was pro slavery and Locky couldn't stand it because it pushed the Scots and the Irish out of the job market(Mexican wage slaves came later). This would come to a head 18th century style, a duel. What happened? Welsh politicians should nae pick fights with Scottish soldier laddies.
Not only will this story get you laid -- it will cause unicorns to shit Skittles.

  5. I've read you since '07, and I would call this a definite Top-Ten rant.

Here's the future as I see it: There will be those who get a Fed-Gov paycheck, and then everybody else. Think Stalin's Russia. That's your future.

Actually, if preppers aren't already in the hinter-boonies (like you, Lord Bison), it's probably too late anyways.

Hall-of-fame post, my friend. I'll try to send you a little something.

    2. I agree - like stalins russia economicly for a while at least. the smart prepper is already relocating part time to their vacation cabin if they got a .gov job they are sending the family there while they work for enough $ and time to pay off the cabin and sell the luxuries and properties in the city. The purges are coming. At first for the upper mid level beauracrats whos dept. fails in some way (benghazi, obama care website, etc) they will be fired and loose $ soon though it will be prison time for 'terrorism against the government ' (aka causing a government shutdown etc). and for the common folk who are in a 'disaster area' (including eventually 'economic disaster areas') who will be rounded up and sent to refugee camps while the learn new career and 'life' skills before being released to swarm upon another community;
There is still a little time to get to the hinter boonies - travel is monitored but barely restricted in a reasonable (@300mile or 8 hour car drive). But which way to jump? Every place has its threats. The river front property is liable to flood as climate change and dam failures occure, The desert is nearly as liable to flood, and suffer worse from power outage and drought, etc, etc. Staying mobile would be nearly ideal but as the collapse occures that just makes you an early refugee...

    3. HMMM. Rounding up Skittles Eaters, getting them all agitated, push the PC "victim" agenda, release on disfavored honkey community. No need for regular military.

  6. Sounds like a pretty awful story.

I'll never convince you but based on what a lot of people said at the time, including the folks in the South who did not want to leave the Union, the slavery connection is very strong from the Southern end. On the Northern side, the fight to save the Union, versus to abolish slavery, was dominant early on. It is from their end that the war not being about slavery is strongest. It was after the South lost the war that all the Southern apologists started the economic talking point, they didn't much care before then.

Interestingly enough, the whole cash based agricultural export was headed (for another) major crash as new sources opened up and the South would have been in serious trouble in any case.

    1. I'm thinking more along the lines that folks supported the economic paradigm that paid the bills/put food on the table. They didn't need an in depth understanding, just a grasp on the basics. Most of us support imperialism, clocked in patriatism, instinctively understanding the need for the oil. We just wag the flag and don't go beyond that. A Southerner could say, "It's our way, our choice" and not think deeply past that. He didn't care about slavery one way or another, just the end result.
