prison blues

PRISON BLUES

A regular feature of post-apocalypse literature ( except pulp fiction types of the genre where our super hero can’t get to a semi-auto quick enough to start killing everybody with an unlimited supply of ammunition ) is the prison break/prisoner dilemma.  Either a group of vicious killers breaks from their bonds and roams the countryside sucking in new members in a snowball effect and completely terrorizes the good folk of every town, or the prison guards have a discussion on how to take care of these rascally immoral scumbags-the consensus usually being a reflection of the amount of thought the author gave the situation which ranges from “they are all evil, let God sort them out” to “a lot of them are harmless, kill only the killers”.  Now, while all of this is interesting, it really is  much to do about very little.  Even if the percentage of population our country has incarcerated is the highest in the world, higher than North Korea or China or Bulgaria, the actual numbers are quite low overall.  And there is a reason for our high per-capita numbers.  We have more political prisoners in jail than the aforementioned communist countries.

*

We don’t call them political prisoners, as that might be politically incorrect for the regime.  But The War On Drugs after several decades has bloated the prison population with mostly non-violent drug user/dealers.  Possession lands a lot of bodies in jail.  I’m not saying a lot of these guys are going to be good neighbors, I’m saying that even asshats don’t deserve five years without parole for selling a few rocks of crack.  Because of mandatory sentencing by our beloved federal government, a LOT of real criminals, the murderers and rapists, are serving less time than harmless drugies.  Now, this is not to say that most prisoners are harmless.  No, better to just assume ALL are.  But my point is that the entire system is an illusion.  The very expensive system is based on a lie of inflated numbers akin to Vietnamese body counts.  So don’t listen to our masters about our “crime problem” they themselves created.

*

So, back to the low absolute numbers.  There just aren’t that many prisoners out there.  If your prison is fifty miles from nowhere, and you bought a homestead ten miles from it so that you are the only house around and your wood smoke becomes a beacon, okay, perhaps you’ve increased your risks.  Perhaps.  But I submit to you that overall, in the great scheme of things, your changes are far greater of being attacked today by free criminals than in the future by escaped ones.  Look at all the Black on White crimes today, a sanctioned activity under the guise of “youths on social media gone bad”, and compare that to the number of escaped criminals behaving worse.  Why is the Apocalypse going to make things different?  Two seconds after the crash, mobs of Blacks will congregate on any vulnerable White and beat them to death.  I’d rather take my changes on living near a prison than living in a large urban area.

  1. Dr George Beto, former Director TDJC, taught at SHSU Huntsville TX. One evening in class Dr Beto
stated that for every one hundred felonies committed there are three arrests and one and one half convictions.
I asked, "Sir, what is the point of having prisons?" He replied, " Prisons are magnificently irrelevant."
Thus, for every thug in prison there are forty eight or so on the street looking for prey.

    1. Prisons serve to keep the honest citizens in fear of the government.

    1. I think a good feature of Black culture is the fact they never assimilated into the Borg. However, conversly, it also means they carried over tribal warfare and this means Whites are the enemy. Not judging, they are just ahead of their time now. We will all be there.

    3. How is it in the same post, you pay attention to the demographics of prisoner population and yet ignore the actual incident rate of the latest fad of "wilding" as reported by the news media.

Wilding was all the scare in the 90s, and it turned out to be a media driven frenzy. Classic case was in NYC, where a couple of young black guys were harassed into confessing a white woman while on a wilding spree: it was later found that it was the more normal serial rapist (out of jail) who was responsible.

By the numbers, you are far more at risk from released prisoners than you are from wilding black (or white) youth. Particularly if the social media isn't even working.

    4. I assume "wilding" is the same as "flash mob"? I understand the few cases are blown up. Keep Whitey scared his women will be sullied. Same as 170 years ago. My point is that trivializing it encourages much more come increased break-down.

  3. Hope you are right. I didn't move next to prisons, but they moved near me.

If let of prison, most will want to go home, which is far from here for the vast majority of them.

    1. See a minions comment just added. About the low conviction rate. More amongst us. Course, the concentrations might be a factor...

  5. Good job on your 500 words/day post. They've been all meat and no gristle.

Now that you have a little time, is there any possible way you can add a chapter to your early fiction attempt about Randy and John, the jerky maker?

    I love that story!

    1. I know I tried the lower word count before and it didn't work. But this time it seems to "click". I loved that first story. Perhaps I'll tackle it again ( I just need to go with a first person narrative since it seems all my characters are too much alike ).

  6. I worked in Michigan prison for 10 years and heard rumored by the inmates (that had more knowledge about us and our jobs than us guards). Under marshal law confinement levels 3 and up are to be executed. The rest are let loose. 3 and under are drug offenses, sex and drunk drivers.

  7. Lord Bison of Great Basin and King of Coiffure;

The whole Prison Break/Prisoner dilemma is a tired excuse to pad pages of lackluster talent's pitiful attempt a post-apocalypse fiction. As Gabriel Suarez once wrote; the average felon incarcerated for more than five years, his marksmanship has degraded to the point of irrelevancy, thus will not be a factor in a combat contest. While prisoners tend to be vicious in a hand to hand combat scenario, they will have no skill what so ever behind a true distance weapon. This provides the frugal bolt-action rifleman to accumulate large numbers of confirmed kills well before the formerly incarcerated get within poodle-shooter range of the frugal bolt-action rifleman's position. No credible threat here, just a bunch of men who feel wronged by the system, looking to tear everything down. Eradicate at will! Keep keeping it real James!
