empire

EMPIRE

Before we start today, once again an unwanted update on the most important person in my life, me.  Sorry, but since you don’t pay for the actual blog ( although you all support me wonderfully and thank you oodles ) I get to bore you at will.  Here I am, one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, giving the wife money for her bus ticket for the summer family visit, and she turns on me like a rabid vicious Hellhound.  I knew I was going to be real busy, so I gave her round trip taxi fare to go buy the tickets herself.  And like a dumbass, I didn’t stop and think she would load up on the booze with the change.  Well, I get home- after a hard day’s work helping to support her, mind you- and now she wants ANOTHER bus ticket to go see her daughter who is crying emergency again.  I made a totally innocent remark on how I shouldn’t be expected to pay her for me to abstain from sex for another two weeks.  Totally innocent, I tells ya!  So that started the whole “you just think I’m a whore” tirade.  I didn’t stop to explain to her that with a whore you don’t have to listen to them talk after sex.  No, I just told her to piss off.  So once again here we are breaking up.  It’s so old hat, as I’m sure you’d all agree, that it doesn’t even bother me anymore.  On the contrary, I’m pretty excited about expanding my writing schedule.  So, once again my pain is the minions gain.  You are welcome.

*

A minion gave me an article idea ( and about damn time, you guys were slacking pretty wicked ) on details of empire old and new.  I’m not sure I’ll be able to do the subject sufficient credit but I shall try.  I’m thinking a quick round up of our current situation and a look into the future of the continental US.  We now have three contenders for global domination.  The US, Russia and China.  The US might have started out as a commodity empire, trying to control all the jungles in this hemisphere along with a few islands such as Hawaii ( one of our first orchestrated coups to install a friend ) and the Philippians ( even if our first non-hemispheric colony didn’t work out so well, at least we got a great military sidearm out of the deal ), but all agricultural interests gave way to oil by WWII and after that our only other interest was financial colonization.  Unfortunately, that twin dependence on petroleum and dollar hegemony is now biting us on the ass as the oil supply contracts and the world looks elsewhere for a trading currency with military assets to protect it.  Our empire is done, and only the idiots fail to realize it.  And you thought it was bad now?  Wait for trade to cease.

*

Russia isn’t really a contender outside its sphere.  They have always been more defense minded, starting with the Asian horde threat from Moscow outward.  Any expansion from them was always defensive, contrary to Cold War propaganda ( the only threat during that conflict was the US government towards its own citizens ).  Not to discount their initial empire expanding past the Urals towards Siberia and the Pacific, but after many stops and starts I think they are relatively happy to wallow in their status quo as resource provider with enough buffer space to defend themselves.  China has both a sounder economy ( in an age of universal fiat currency computing, this is a relative concept ) and the means to enforce a new trading currency.  You don’t get trade without a military.  They have both, the means of production and protection.  Now, this is not to say that China is the next global empire for a hundred years.  What they will be is a regional empire for a short time, then be forced to contract with the petroleum supply.  As of now, they can expand because of their very frugal use of energy supplies, but you can’t ride a contraction any other way but down.  They will expand, but not for long.  Of course, they also have plenty of historical experience at this, so I see no long term threat to them as a nation ( and, no, masses of dissatisfied peasants have never been a threat either other than as a tool in palace intrigue ).

*

Now, while I’ve had fun depicting China as a US occupier, odds are against it.  Remember, energy contraction.  You want to decrease transportation needs, not increase them.  I’m pretty much guessing an Africanized collapse.  Everyone else pretty much leaves the continent alone to wallow in its own conflict, merely picking treasure off the edges of that war zone.  Occupy the LA oil basin, or that in Louisiana, perhaps.  Take over the Gulf oil production, most likely.  But occupy the country proper I very much doubt.  Again, it’s about transportation and logistics in a world of contracting energy supply.  The North American continent is no longer a rich oasis ripe for the plucking ( even Canada is on par with Venezuela as far as carbon fuels- actually worse if there is any natural gas interruption ).  What we will see is a Balkanization as every race and religion erupts in hatred and loathing, a process well under way for generations and only halted by federal freebies to bribe complacency.  Any future empire in a post Apocalypse world is going to be founded on genocide.  There won’t be surplus resources to bribe pacification, so the only thing left is warfare to irradiate conflict between tribes.  You can build an empire after the collapse, but it will be small, short lived and forgotten to history.  Without the resources to expand much, that is your fate.  You can fight over the scraps but you are always vulnerable.  Assured failure, just like any future relationships I might have.

Oh, and BTW, three new K-book reviews.

  2. huh, puts me in mind of writing a short story- about 'new US' empire that sets up an automated space manufactory, and what happens to those goods it sends down to earth after THAT empire collapses...

    1. I would love to see a story of space WITH peak oil in mind. Most authors cheat on the energy supply for sci-fi.

  4. Just a brief observation, actually a repeating of a truism regarding womenfolk I heard a long, long time ago.

  5. Oh.. and while I'm at it, got a book to recommend:

Essential Liberty - by Rob Olive.

It's got all the elements required of a good read, and it's timely like you would not believe.

    Seriously worth the time.

  6. Short term you're right. There will be no major empires without the oil to sustain them but, Rome wasn't built on oil. Neither was Babylon or Persia. We will one day see an empire along those lines emerge once there is sufficient population to support it and the land has recovered enough to be resource rich (in timber and game of course).

Even longer term I think your once in a species limited time oil concept is in jeopardy. If Gore warming takes off or we we enter an ice age or the poles shift it will drastically change earths geography. At that time it's easy to see previously locked away sources of oil become economically viable and produce a second oil age. Who knows, there could be another Saudi Arabia under the South Pole.

    1. I don't think I ever thought about it that way. Interesting point. In another 500 years, perhaps? I hope our history is perserved so they knopw how to NOT waste it the next time.

  7. Nightshift here....anon 3:18. If that was an attempt at humor, identify yourself. If it was intended to be malisious, which is appears, then you are an idiot. Talking about letting Jim set up on an acre has nothing to do with whatever fantasies you are having. Obviously you missed the humor disclaimer in my comment. Jim, I thought we were troll free here lately, seems like one showed up?

  8. There are always trolls. Sometimes they growl, other times are silent. Like politicians and pedofiles, they never are eradicated.
