et tu, simpson's?

ET TU SIMPSONS?
I don’t know how many of you watch Sunday night cartoons on Fox, but they are nearly the highlight of my pathetic and miserable life.  There are adult themes bordering on rank and crude and rude for two hours and I love every minute of it, being a bit on the low brow side when it comes to humor.  And I make no apologies for it.  If it’s funny, it’s funny.  I don’t care if it involves mishaps with your bowels or other bathroom humor.  Or makes fun of gays or minorities or cracker honkey mo-fo’s.  Now, The Simpson’s are showing their age a bit.  You don’t go two decades and not fray a bit around the edges.  You are still in the universe of 80’s cutting edge humor, so it doesn’t age as well as a fine wine.  Yet, I’m almost beginning to wonder if the cartoon hasn’t been in a gradual state of selling out to retain its time slot.  The Simpson’s has always made fun of anybody and everybody and that is one of its charms.  It might poke fun of white boys one week and liberal college professors the next.  Yet last night it devoted the episode to a very unsubtle slam at preppers and I don’t know if I’m just being too paranoid or if I’ve just been asleep at the remote control and The Simpson’s have gone all political on me.  Have they joined the media cartel in propagandizing?  Are they conditioning the masses?

Homer is in the bar and a stranger shows him a U-Tube clip on “how we are all going to die!”.  Always looking for a new way to screw up, Homer embraces becoming a prepper wholeheartedly.  He strips the shelves in the kitchen, makes bug out bags, builds a false wall in the garage to hide it all, etc.  Whoever wrote the episode did a bit more research than simply reading a single Wiki page.  All the bugaboos were there.  Then, as he is busy daydreaming/planning for the Apocalypse, he ignores all the safety warnings in the nuclear power plant and allows something to blow up, which causes an EMP.  The group which adopted Homer all assemble at the super deluxe survival hideaway, anticipating this is The End ( not realizing the EMP is localized to the city Springfield ).  But Marge doesn’t like the idea of hoarding or killing starving neighbors so she talks Homer into stealing a trailer full of food and water and driving it back to the city to help everyone out that didn’t prepare ( all electronics are out, except cars, and everything at the retreat works.  The retreat, perhaps.  The cars is a bit too much of a stretch to believe.  Well, there was one flaw in the writers research ).  When they get back they discover that the power is back on and everything is normal.  The retreat leader is chastised for his paranoia and all is super peachy again.

Now, here is where my main complaint lies.  The scientist guy, back in the city, while explaining about the local EMP simply says, “it was out for awhile and then IT JUST CAME BACK ON”( emphasis mine ).  Which obviously is saying to those with no interest in and only passing knowledge of solar flares and nuke EMP’s, don’t you worry your pretty little heads about THAT crackpot theory.  Then, the retreat leader, when confronted by the citizenry ( the retreat group had chased Homer back into town after he swiped all the supplies ), basically confessed he was only a prepper because “I just wanted to be someone important”.  Translated, preppers are losers who only obviously make up these crackpot theories because they need to feel they one day can be somebody.   So if you are stupid enough to believe in EMP’s or zombies or Peak Oil ( yes, they actually had a reference to Peak Oil at the beginning [ it was one of the doomer cards in a deck of cards they pyramided up and then knocked over ] it is only because you are a pathetic loser.  Peak Oil, when it was first presented, was a crackpot theory ( because, hey, obviously, only crackpots think resources run out after consuming them like mad ).  Then, after evidence became hard to ignore, they all jumped on the bandwagon ( The Economists, National Geographic, et all ) and claimed that even though it was going to happen it was still thirty years away.  Now, after the fact, the new propaganda is that Peak Oil was just cheap peak and we’ll NEVER run out of More Expensive Oil Substitutes.  I see we are now back to making fun of anyone who thinks Peak Oil means collapse.

Thank you, Simpson’s, for selling out and jumping on the bandwagon of Deniers ( notice how Climate Deniers are evil Earth Rapers And Defilers but Peak Deniers are rational and educated and normal? ).  Of course, I could just be totally paranoid here and blowing things out of proportion.  I just don’t think so.  I’m willing to reconsider but this just seemed a bit too much.  I have been watching the Simpson’s for twenty years.  Not religiously, but on an ongoing regular basis.  It just doesn’t seem this was a normal “poking fun” like they usually do.  Although I could be too close to the whole issue emotionally ( even if I do trick myself into believing I’m rational and think things all the way through with what information I have ).  Well, at least it was something to over-analysis about.

  1. I have no doubt that the Simpsons have joined the rank and file of the politically correct media. They are allowed to continue with the occasional slam at some protected class, as long as they promote the overlords message now and then.

Who else but our omnipotent overseers could tell you to gather together supplies for an emergency, then call you a domestic terrorist for preparing for an emergency?

It is the beginning of the end and this topic is just a tiny piece of it.
