STRESS
There is a lot of talk about The Great Depression and how certain aspects of it will be a lesson for the future.  Such as how crimes against property were widespread and how domestic abuse spiked due to extreme stress from financial difficulties.  Obviously, if you have a flock of chickens or a herd of cows, some asswhore is going to steal them to sell for cash money ( no one had to starve in the cities near soup kitchens, but due to the nature of private charities a lot of rural folks, left on their own, did suffer malnutrition ).  The unemployed were not always honest.  As far as domestic abuse, it follows that a more submissive group of dutiful wives were not going to have abusive husbands arrested, so when a behavior is encouraged, or at least rarely punished, you get a lot more of it.  Of course, these two examples don’t apply to the future.  In case you missed some of the news in the last fifty years, there are certain segments of the population that are very violent by nature and we now have a situation where violence is just an accepted part of life.  We see truck drivers pulled from their rigs and beat to death, or schoolchildren beat to death or convenience store clerks beat to death over thirty three bucks in the register, collectively we give a big yawn and go about our business.  The consensus seems to be that if you are too poor to move away from the ghetto, you are just a victim waiting their lottery ticket to come up.  Now, the Yuppie Scum are right, but for the wrong reason.  They think you should chain yourself to the corporate tit to make more money and move to a gated community.  In America, there are two classes.  Rich, able to buy security ( this applies to Survivalist Yuppie Scum, in spades ).  My viewpoint is that if you are poor, you must be smarter than the Yuppie Scum.  You can’t buy security.  But you can move away from the big city.  In fact, the poorer you are, the safer you can be ( moving to junk land in the boonies ).  I don’t care if you are victimized if you are too stupid to move out of the ghetto.  They don’t care because you won’t buy expensive security.

There won’t be a return to only property crime because everyone, criminal and potential victims alike, are used to violence now.  And there won’t be much more in the way of increased domestic violence because by and large women don’t have to stick around for that crap if they don’t want to.  That is one of the great things about women’s lib, easy divorce and women in the workplace ( there is a lot wrong with it, but these are some positive things ).  Until our social institutions crash and burn, we won’t return to easy women battery.  And until everyone is armed again, we won’t return to a more peaceful society.  Let’s face it, The Great Depression and our Current Greater Depression have about zero things in common.  The two societies are night and day.  What I’d like to make as today’s point is that what they do have in common ( if nothing else ), is the stress factor.  The last Depression turned everyone’s world upside down, as will this one.  Before, no one saw it coming.  Now, no one sees it coming.  Not how it truly is going to be.  They think they will still be able to grasp at their current job, or that law and order will stick around.  News flash- this change has everything in common with the fall of Rome and the start of the Dark Ages and nothing in common with 1930.  All our infrastructure, from bridges to any corporate job, to our currency to law enforcement, all will collapse.  We won’t be alive to start eco-villages.  The victors of the battles can put serfs to work farming organically, but that isn’t the same thing.  But let’s not even go there, today.  Let’s just talk about the day after and your mental state.

Remember your last divorce or your last job layoff?  You knew it was coming.  The water cooler talk pointed to lay-offs and you knew you were the likely candidate.  Or, you and the wife had been having serious issues.  You knew the split was coming.  And yet, even knowing, the mental trauma, the stress, was still more than you counted on.  We have talked about this.  You get sick as a dog, or get no sleep, or go hit the bottle.  Yet, no one thinks they will be incapacitated as the crap hits the fan.  They think, because they knew bad things would happen, that foreknowledge alone was enough to get them through the period of stress.  Yes, your body and brain are built to fight or flight.  For short periods of time.  Not months or years as your world melts away and it is one problem after another and the problems never stop coming.  You ain’t no comic book hero and you won’t manfully meet challenge after challenge  without serious side effects.  Just a word to the wise.

I’m getting a whole lot more e-mail than I used to asking for advice.  I love it.  It means the loyal minions I have left are hard core.  They are actually doing rather than just being entertained.  But, as you know, I have a limited amount of online time.  I don’t get enough solar power to run a home computer for Internet, so I’m only online for 45 minutes in the morning and fifteen after work ( lunch is for writing the blog ).  So, please observe the following guidelines.  I love reading how you are doing things.  I love a back story.  But don’t bury questions in that story.  Give me the background info, as short or as long as you please, and then, at the end, ask one or two questions.  You can write as often as you like, even with variations of the same question.  You can ask stupid questions ( I always ask stupid questions, and I learn a lot that way.  When you try to bluff your way you don’t learn anything ).  I just ask that each e-mail is only one or two questions and you make them easy to see.  Then, I can answer in the short period I have.  I’m not bothered by e-mails, just ones that take too long to figure out.  Also, sometimes it takes a few days to answer.  I run out of time, or you ask during the weekend while I’m not at work.  Just be patient.  I’ll get back.  If I don’t, feel free to bug me again.  Sometimes I just forget and your message gets buried- it’s not personal, I just didn’t remember.  Thanks, I do love you all ( some more than others ).

  2. Most domestic violence (58%) is committed by the woman. Most men don't call the police. Most domestic violence is not the beating that gets on the 6:00 news but usually a push or grabbing an arm etc. Still technically domestic violence and divorce lawyers encourage the women to provoke some kind of violence, call the police and get it on the record. I have seen domestic violence "evidence" where there was nothing but imagination, i.e. the woman claimed there was a red spot on her arm where she was grabbed, the police took a picture but there was really nothing. The best one was where a woman ripped her own blouse scratching her throat but her husband was no dummy and had the police check HER fingernails for evidence of a fraudulent charge. Most children are beaten and even killed by their mother not their father. Domestic violence against children is mostly committed by the female.

  3. James;

    Of course you're getting a boatload of e-mails soliciting for advice, because you are one of the few out there, keeping it completely real, while the rest are keeping it phony. I dig the idea of ammunition conservation thru exclusive use of bolt-action firearms. I dig the idea of human-powered personal transportation and I dig the idea of working thru the collapse on so-called 'junk land." These are the ideas of genius, while your contemporaries are shills for the corporate elite, advertising their over-priced, break-down on you when its really needed garbage.

    Keep, Keeping it Real James!
